The Ultimate Panna Safari Guide

Published on August 20, 2026 by Lokendra Yadav

Planning a trip to the Panna Tiger Reserve can seem overwhelming, especially if it's your first time navigating the forest department rules, choosing gates, and booking gypsies. In this guide, we break down everything you need to know for a successful tiger safari.

1. Choosing the Right Gate

Panna is divided into Core and Buffer zones. The Madla Gate is the most popular and easily accessible, situated right on the highway. It offers a mix of dense forest, the Ken River, and plateaus. Hinouta is rockier and great for spotting sloth bears and leopards.

2. Morning vs. Evening Safari

  • Morning Safari (Sunrise): Animals are generally more active. Predators are usually returning from their night hunts, and bird activity is at its peak.
  • Evening Safari: Great for catching animals coming down to the waterholes to drink before dusk. The sunset over the Ken River is a bonus.

3. Booking the Permit

Forest permits are strictly limited and often sell out weeks in advance. We highly recommend booking at least 30 to 45 days prior. Remember, your original ID (Aadhaar or Passport) used during booking must be presented at the gate.
